All things to doKona and the west coast
A Kona luau
A luau is a dinner show: imu ceremony, buffet, hula, and a fire-knife finale. It will not teach you Hawaiian history. It is a good first-night plan if you want one evening where nobody has to drive after dark.

- Time
- About 3 hours
- Where
- Kailua-Kona
- When
- Sunset
- Pair with
- Not the manta night
When it is worth it
Book it if you like a buffet and a show, and if this is your first time in Hawaiʻi. Skip it if you already know you hate tourist revues. The money is better on the manta snorkel.
Oceanfront seating in Kailua-Kona is the version people mean when they say “the Kona luau”. Compare start times. You want the ceremony at sunset, not a 5 p.m. slot in June when the sun is still high.
How to fit it in
The whole evening runs about three hours. Do not stack it with a night snorkel. Both end late, and one of them will feel rushed.
Drinks are usually included. Say so when you compare prices, or a cheap ticket is not cheap.
