Kealakekua Bay snorkel cruise

The bay at Captain Cook’s monument is the best snorkel most visitors will do. The trail down is long, hot and closed more often than the blogs admit. A morning cruise is the sensible way in.

Book the bay, not a dolphin chase

Spinner dolphins rest in this bay in the morning. Swimming after them is illegal and it ruins the animals’ rest. Choose a snorkel cruise that goes to the monument and treats dolphins as something you might see from the boat, not a product.

The reef along the cliff is the point: coral, fish, and water that stays clear when the west side is calm. Go in the morning. Afternoon trades chop the bay up.

How the morning goes

Boats leave from Keauhou, around 3 to 4 hours door to door including the snorkel. Gear is included on almost every listing. If you burn easily, a rash guard matters more than a second coffee.

Sea conditions cancel trips. Book a day that is not your last morning on the island, so a cancellation is an inconvenience and not a missed bay.
