Where to stay on the Big Island

Where to stay in Volcano

Volcano Village sits in the rainforest at about 4,000 feet, a few minutes from Kīlauea. One or two nights here beat every day trip from Kona. Nights are cold and damp. There is no beach and almost nothing open after dinner.

Stay here if

You want sunrise and after dark at the park without a five-hour round trip in the middle.

Skip it if

You need a pool and a warm evening. Keep Kona or Hilo for the rest of the trip.

In the village

Lodges, B&Bs and rentals on quiet roads. A car is not optional.

Near the park entrance

Shorter mornings. You still want a jacket: the summit is often in the 50s °F after dark.

Not a full week

Two nights covers the crater, the lava tube and a night glow. A week here only makes sense if the volcano is the whole trip.
